Environmental impact
Heraklith wood wool insulation boards stand at the forefront of environmental responsibility in production and building construction. Whenever possible, we use wood certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and/or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
By using certified wood, garnering high environmental credentials, and optimising our production process, Knauf Insulation delivers wood wool products that are natural and sustainable. The high environmental credentials of Heraklith products are confirmed by their certification with Blue Angel, a voluntary programme that stands as the world’s oldest eco-label for products and services.
Heraklith makes available to our customers the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for our products in various applications, each of which are based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) carried out across all our plants. This allows us to quantify the benefit of using wood as a raw material and the impact of the binder and to accurately assess the environmental impact of product.
Knauf Insulation is committed to make available, upon request, environmental impact information related to products it places on the market. The format can either be a standard verified EPD or a simpler Environmental Fact Sheet (EFS) which is based on a verified EPD.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of any product is based on its environmental impact both inside and outside the production environment “from cradle to grave.” For our wood wool insulation boards, it includes the impacts of raw material extraction to produce the boards (including upstream processes, auxiliary processes, transportation, and energy use), manufacturing, transportation to the construction site, and end-of-life scenarios.
The full LCA results are reported in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The results reported in any Heraklith EPD related to the LCA of wood wool insulation produced by Knauf Insulation covers all production sites and is based on using the wood wool boards in applications such as underground parking garages, basement ceilings, and pitched roofs.
Apart from providing environmental information on our products, Knauf Insulation is committed to sustainability. Our view and our policies are publicly available on the corporate website, and we produce an annual report in which we outline our achievements and our performance relative to the targets we have set to ourselves.
